Computerized Cutting: Blade, Laser, Water Jet, Plasma
Computerized cutting uses electronic controls to drive the cutting device, its travel path, and its speed, guided by stored computer-generated markers (paper markers aren't needed, though they may help bundling). The headline advantage is accuracy. There are four automated systems.
The four systems
| System | Mechanism | Plies | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Blade | Numerically-controlled reciprocating knife | Multiple | Most developed and widely used |
| Laser | Vaporises fabric with a focused beam | Single | ~2× knife speed; seals edges (can fuse plies) |
| Water jet | High-pressure water shears the fabric | Multiple | No fusing; used for leather/vinyl |
| Plasma | Plasma jet | - | One of the four automated methods |
