Parts of a Portable Cutting Knife: Six Components
Straight (vertical, up-and-down) and round (one-way thrust) portable knives share the same six components: blade, base plate, power system, sharpening device, handle, and blade guard. Knowing each part, and how it affects the cut, is how a cutter gets clean, accurate parts and stays safe.
The six components
1. Blade
Mounted vertically at 90° to the cutting surface. Blades vary in shape, size, cutting action, and edge fineness:
- A straight blade contacts the spread at 90°, so (if kept vertical) all plies cut at once.
- A round blade contacts at an angle, so the top ply cuts before the bottom ply.
Blade edge type drives cut quality: straight/flat edges are general-purpose and most common; saw-toothed, serrated, or wavy/striated edges suit specific fabrics.
2. Base plate
The foundation that supports and balances the mechanism. It guides the knife relative to the table and elevates the spread off the table so the blade can contact it. Bearing rollers aid maneuverability; sloped, curved edges slide under the bottom ply with less distortion; and it holds the blade at a 90° pitch.
3. Power system
Controls the motor and cutting speed. Power needed depends on spread height and fabric density; motor horsepower sets the blade's thrust. Higher speed lets operators move faster; more horsepower adds power but also weight (balanced by the housing and base plate).
4. Sharpening device
Found on almost all mechanized cutters. Blades dull quickly on deep spreads or dense fabric, and a dull blade causes friction and rough, frayed, or fused edges. Sharpeners (stone/emery wheels or abrasive belts) are used frequently during cutting at the touch of a control.
5. Handle
The grip the operator uses to guide and propel the knife; the other hand stabilises the plies ahead of the blade to prevent bunching.
6. Blade guard
At spread height it rests on the top ply to stabilise the spread and protect the hand. Metal-mesh gloves are also available as a safety device for vertical-knife cutters.
