What are points of measure (POM)?

A point of measure (POM) is a specific, agreed location on a garment where a measurement is taken, chest width, back length, sleeve opening, and so on. Together, points of measure form the measurement specification and size chart a factory uses to sample and grade a style consistently.

Why points of measure matter

Fit lives or dies on the measurement spec. If a POM is undefined or measured differently by the factory, samples come back wrong and revision cycles multiply. Clear, consistently-defined points of measure remove that ambiguity, everyone measures the same place the same way.

How a POM is defined, not just named

A point of measure is only useful if everyone measures it the same way. 'Chest' is not a spec; 'chest, measured 2.5cm below the armhole, edge to edge, laid flat, doubled' is. The name tells you roughly where, the definition tells you exactly how, and the definition is what stops a factory and a designer from reading the same word two different ways.
