Motion Analysis: The Principles of Motion Economy
A motion is an act of moving a body part, and fewer motions mean less time and energy per operation. Motions can be eliminated with a work aid or a method change, and shortened by arranging the workstation so every part is close and easily reached. Motion analysis is how an engineer finds and removes wasted movement. Its principles are captured in the mnemonic MISS CHURN.
The body-movement hierarchy
The smaller the body part moved, the better (less time, less fatigue). From best to worst:
Finger → Fingers → Hand → Forearm → Arm → Body → Working about (worst).
Keep the extent of every movement to the minimum on this scale.
