Documents Required for Garment Export
Export documents are the papers the exporter's bank sends to the importer's bank to release against payment or acceptance, and they must evidence that the goods were loaded onto a vessel. They're what clears customs and lets the importer take delivery. Crucially, in international trade payment is made on documents, not goods, so a formatting slip becomes a discrepancy that delays money. Here are the seven core documents.
The seven shipping documents
| Document | What it is / proves | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Commercial invoice | Seller→buyer contract and proof of sale | Sets value for customs duty; does not convey title |
| Packing list | Every product and packing detail per shipment | Used by forwarders, brokers, customs to handle cargo |
| Certificate of origin | Where the goods were made | Non-preferential ("ordinary") or preferential (for duty benefit) |
| Inspection certificate | Goods inspected and found good before shipment | Often required under L/C terms |
| Bill of lading (B/L) | Carrier's receipt + title to the goods | Buyer needs the original to take possession |
| Bill of exchange (draft) | Unconditional order to pay (sight or time) | Drawer (seller) → Drawee (importer/bank) → Payee (seller/bank) |
| Certificate of insurance | Details of insurance coverage | Confirms cargo is covered |
