Sea Freight Calculation: CBM/CFT and Containers
Sea freight is charged on the volume of cargo (in CFT or CBM), because a ship sells space. It's the cheap, slow option, used when time isn't the constraint. Charges depend on the shipping line, the distance, and the container size and utilization. Here's how to calculate the volume, the container capacities, and a full worked order.
Volume formulas (per carton)
| From | To | Formula |
|---|---|---|
| Inch | CFT | (L × W × H) ÷ (12 × 12 × 12) |
| Inch | CBM | (L × W × H) ÷ (39.37³) |
| cm | CFT | (L × W × H) ÷ (30.48³) |
| cm | CBM | (L × W × H) ÷ (100 × 100 × 100) |
Example (22" × 16" × 14" carton): CFT = 2.85, CBM = 0.08.
