Work Study for Apparel Production
Work study is the umbrella term for two techniques, method study and work measurement, used to examine human work and systematically improve the efficiency and economy of a situation. It's one of the most reliable ways a factory has to raise productivity, because the savings start immediately and continue for the life of the product. Here's how it works and what makes it succeed.
The two techniques
| Technique | What it does |
|---|---|
| Method study | Systematically records and critically examines existing and proposed ways of working, to develop easier, more effective methods and cut cost |
| Work measurement | Applies techniques to establish the time for a qualified worker to do a specific job at a defined performance level |
How they relate: method study reduces the work content of a job; work measurement investigates and reduces the ineffective time and then sets the time standard for the improved method. Method study comes first; work measurement times the result.
