Types of Marker in Garment Cutting
A marker is the plan that decides how pattern pieces are laid out on fabric before cutting, and it is one of the biggest levers on fabric efficiency (which drives the 60–70% of garment cost that is fabric). Which marker you can use is not a free choice: it is set by the fabric's put-up, the garment's symmetry, and how the pattern pieces are arranged. Here are the seven marker types and when each one applies.
What decides the marker
Three factors choose the marker for you:
- Fabric put-up - how the goods are folded or rolled (open, folded, tubular).
- Symmetry - is the garment symmetric or asymmetric?
- Pattern arrangement - how pieces fit together along the marker length.
